When the world stopped, running didn’t. And one of the choices NYer’s made in an overwhelming way - was to start their running journey. It was the ‘one’ thing they could do for themselves - and that was powerful.
New York City isn’t a track. It’s not a training facility. It’s not winding country roads with pine tree vistas.
It’s home to over eight million people, 4.4 million cars barreling up and down Broadway, three airports, clogged bridges, many types of scooters, more wild animals than we’d like to admit, and a million other unmentionables, ready to attack your senses.
But that’s kinda part of it. When you run New York, block by block, you travel through new worlds. Past the courts, the stages, and the towers that occupy the dreams of millions who haven’t made it here yet. Always pushing the limits in a city full of them. Here, it’s not just why you run, it’s what happens when you run.
Because if you can run through this, you’ve gotta have a few unexpected stories.
So we celebrated the new reasons the NYC Running Community kept running in 2021, and how the power of that community helps energize the return of New York through 3 different stories: Shalane Flanagan (American long-distance runner, Olympic medalist and New York City Marathon champion), OMRC (a casual running club that meets Saturday mornings for long runs) and Thomas Panek (the first blind runner to run a half marathon in New York solo).
